Box Office – Great Grand Masti [2016] has marginally better Day One than Masti [2004]!

Writing was clear on the wall at least a week before the film’s release. As mentioned in this column a couple of days back, it was always going to be an uphill task for Great Grand Masti to put some kind of dent at the Box Office. The promotion couldn’t reach its peak, the film was already available online and the adult comedy genre wasn’t really working, courtesy rejection of two back to back releases a few months back [Kya Kool Hain Hum 3 and Mastizaade].

This reflected in the film’s collections that were just around the 3 crore* mark, which is very poor. In fact to put things in perspective, the first in the series, Masti [2004], had released more than a decade back and still brought in ~2 crore on its Day One. Circa 2016 and though Great Grand Masti has released on at least four times the count of screens, the collections are just marginally better. Let’s not even talk about the collections of Grand Masti [2013] which had brought in 12.5 crore on its Day 1. That was simply phenomenal and perhaps the last of the adult comedies to gain such high for many years to come.

The film has expectedly met with poor reviews, though that is not a big problem per se since this genre can’t be expected to find much of a favor amongst critics. However, what matters is content, response from audience, word of mouth and of course at least some sort of initial. Since none of that is working much in the favor of the film either, not much of a reversal of expected for the Indra Kumar directed film for rest of the weekend.

*Final numbers awaited

Note: All collections as per production and distribution sources
